Ksenia Afanasyeva NOT Retiring

She means business!
Oh yeah! This is great news for all Ksenia Afanasyeva fans! I'm happy. It's already old news that Miss. Afanasyeva is in a political party. In this new article Afan states that she is not done with gymnastics. She is preparing for the Russian Championships, European Championships and Universiade Games. I wish her all the best of luck and that she succeeds and competes at at least the European Championships or Universiade Games. She has missed three European Championships in a row! I hope she's lucky this time. Just never quit Afan :).

  2. I hope she stays in gymnastics for a long time. She has a great shot at winning floor gold at Europeans. I think she's going for Europeans because it will be in Moscow, Russia.

    1. You know, you're right :). I think Afanasyeva can win a floor medal at Europeans.

I was thinking about her major competitors. Her own teammates do have the potential to overtake her. I really do believe that Komova is a great floor worker, she just needs to have a competitive mindset like how she did at the Olympic AA FX (epic routine with even those leaps out of acrobatic skills). I've seen Komova do almost perfect floor routines before. If Grishina can get herself together she could be a threat. Mustafina has potential as well, she did win bronze floor at the Olympics. Either than that their is Sidorova, Belokobylskaya and Dementyeva who are also pretty good on floor but it will depend if they can get back their difficulty and motivation. The new senior for Russia in 2013 will be Evgeniya Shelgunova and her floor is weak. I can't really seeing it get upgraded immediatly by Europeans. She also needs to clean up her execution.

Afanasyeva's Europeans competitors would probably be the Romanians and Vanessa Ferrari. I'm not sure if Izbasa and Ponor are retiring but if they don't they'll be major competitors on FX. Iordache is another threat and I'm pretty sure she's staying in gymnastics for awhile. Either than that I can't really think of any other Europeans who can compete against Afanasyeva. Are there?

Afanasyeva's beam does lack difficulty though. She needs to do something about it. She has good execution but the difficulty is too low. I hope she upgrades somewhere.

I hope she does something like this. Quit training bars and focus on maintaining her DTY on vault, and upgrade beam and floor. She at least needs a third event because of back up in helping the team, for example 2011 worlds. If Afan didn't have a DTY Russia could have been screwed. I can't see her upgrading or improving bars. Also the juniors are not really promising on vault and maybe bars/floor. It will be wise for Afan to keep up with the DTY, just for in case.

I can't wait to see Afan in action next year.

    2. Who do you guess will be at Europeans for Russia?

    3. Hi Anon :)

It's too early to predict because anything can happen and change in gymnastics. But for the sake of having fun I will predict :)

I'm thinking since Euros will be in Moscow, Russia will want to dominate. They will choose their best AA'er since Euros will be 4 gymnasts per nation and only AA & EF, no team finals.

I'm going to say their top two AA'er should be Komova and Mustafina. I think if Grishina is healthy and ready she will be there too. She will have time to recover since Euros is in May. The 4th spot can be up for grabs between anybody. Whoever is the most prepared and has the best chance to win a EF title should go.

As much as I love Afanasyeva she's going to have to prove herself to the Russian coaches. She has to prove that she can still be relevant/competitive. There are other gymnasts on the team that can be used. Paseka has a shot if she can do another event beside vault. Paseka will have a more harder time to prove herself because she is basically a two event specialists (VT & UB) they won't really need her for bars if Komova/Mustafina/Grishina is there. There's also Sidorova. She's been injured a lot and is making a comeback. We'll see how she does in 2013. Demy could actually take the spot if she can get back in shape and compete full difficulty. She can do BB & FX. She didn't show full difficulty in Mexico so we'll see. IMO if she can't get back her difficulty she's not going to last very long on the National team.
There are other minor members on the team but I guess they might not be competitive enough, we'll have to wait and see how everyone does next year.

New senior for 2013 is Shelgunova and she could be used for the experience. I'm not really feeling her but we'll have to see how she does in 2013. She could be amazing, you never know.

Basically Komova/Mustafina/Grishina and hopefully Afan(because I'm bias lol). Anything can happen though. This prediction is way too early.

    4. What about Tatiana Nabieva?

    5. Nabieva is in the same boat as Paseka. I personally feel that Nabieva has a better chance than Paseka. Nabieva is a whole lot better than Paseka on bars. Nabieva and Paseka has a lot of work to do! I would be very surprise if one of those two gets selected for Europeans.

    6. I agree with what you said Anon.

  3. Mr.Hang wouldn't you say that Paseka should go because Russia might not even have a vault finalist at Europeans and you did say that Russia wants to dominate at Europeans. Paseka is a Olympic bronze medalist on vault. Do you think Mustafina will prepare a second vault?
